What you will find

You enter from the west end of Midwich Avenue and find your way by four landmarks piercing the white: the tower of Saint Jude’s Church, the Odeon Cinema sign, the square clock and the subway neon. The diner, grocery store, police station, cinema, hotel, gallery, pawnshop, school and funeral home all have their doors open, with the coffee still on the table.

None of them is a single room: there is an auditorium and a projection booth, a corridor of hotel rooms, barred cells, a nave and a sacristy, a ticket hall and a vault. Beside the neon totem, stairs lead down to the subway basement — concourse, turnstiles, platform and the track where a train pulls in every 24 seconds, opens its doors and leaves without anyone. The streets end at chain-link fences; the only way out is the southeast overpass.

Survival tips for this map

  1. In the fog, sound arrives before sight. Listen for the racing heartbeat and the killer’s voice, and use the interiors to get out of his line of sight.
  2. The subway train kills anyone it runs over as it arrives or leaves; in Captivity it cages them instead. A headlight in the tunnel and the departure bell give you 4.6 s of warning — stay off the rails.
  3. The only exit is the southeast overpass. Plan your route to it before the gate opens.
